VISIT BASICS

You don't have to be a rugged individualist to come visit us ..... although if you are one, there's lots here for you too.

We have most of the services you're likely to need on the road - accommodation, restaurants, retail, fuel, banking, hair salon, hardware, and more. We also have a hospital with 24-hour emergency, dentist and dental hygienist, family physicians and a full-service pharmacy.

One difference between services here and in the city is their hours. Those and other details below:

GETTING TO CORMORANT ISLAND

However you choose to travel, you may want to check current conditions before you go:

BY ROAD AND FERRY
We're 350 km (220 miles) north of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. The highway is four lanes to Campbell River, then two lanes after that (well-maintained but no mobile reception until Port McNeill). Alternatively you can take the All Island Express bus up-island to Port McNeill, or BC Transit bus or a taxi down from Port Hardy.

At Port McNeill, take BC Ferries to Cormorant Island. Here are  BC Ferries fares (pdf) and ferry schedule. The first ferry to Cormorant Island is at 8:40am and the last is at 9:30pm. We share the route with Malcolm Island (Sointula). Travel between Cormorant and Malcolm islands is free.

BY WATER
If you're coming in your own boat, there's lots of room to tie up, and full services available including showers and laundry. Phone or email the Alert Bay harbour manager for details: 250-974-5727 or boatharbour at alertbay.ca

If you don't have a boat and the ferry isn't an option, consider a water taxi. There are several operators in Port McNeill and area.

BY AIR
Pacific Coastal Airlines has scheduled flight service to Port Hardy. As above, taxi or transit can connect you the 40 kilometres to the ferry in Port McNeill.

Groups of more than half a dozen or so may find it convenient to charter a flight directly to the 2900-foot Cormorant Island airstrip (YAL) from South Terminal in Vancouver, Boundary Bay or other small airport. Note that YAL has no scheduled flights, it's unstaffed, but maintained by the Village of Alert Bay, and it's controlled by Port Hardy airport (YZT).
